Exhilarating Compass of the SPS Candidates Programme
IMEC Program

The third module of the Max Havelaar Route (Know Your Business) took place 26 – 28 May in Amsterdam. The theme, the paradox ‘Constructive Demolition’, was connected in different ways with the theme innovation. In many ways you could say it was an exhilarating programme.
At many different and creative venues (house, pub, old dockyard) the group had  conversations with inspiring thought leaders, who worked with the theme from several angles. Geophysicist Guus Berkhout drew a model for an innovative democracy, Frans Nauta debated about do’s and don’ts of the innovation platform and Eric Gerritsen talked frankly about the tension between the policy of The Hague and the muddy practice of implementation. Thee group travelled by bike of course.
Students of the Max Havelaaracademic took care of a smashing evening with the big question who is a real Max Havelaar? In small groups they also visited several exceptional innovative projects. Some participants actuallydrove the bulldozer at the Afval Energie Centrale, a wonderful example of the constructive in destruction.
The program ended in a exciting way in a former NDSM hangar with a Lagerhuis debate, some DG’s and SG’s from The Hague also participated. At this debate Alexander Rinnooy Kan chaired.

Top leaders in Canada inspire GEN participants
IMEC Program

At the end of May the second module of GEN took place in Ottawa, Canada. An important part of the program was to examine leadership in today’s globalized world through the dialogue with top leaders. Participants spoke to top leaders such as Micheal Wernick (Deputy Minister, Indian Affairs and Northern Development), Marc Mayer (Gallery Director, National Art Gallery) and Wilhelmus Geerts (Ambassador Netherlands in Canada). This dialogue resulted in many interesting and valuable insights about ‘global leadership’ and their own personal leadership.
Global Engagement Network
The Global Engagement Network (GEN) is an initiative of the Senior Civil Service of the Dutch government and IMEC. It is specially designed for senior civil servants from different nations to deal with the increasing global nature of today's society. The main goal is to develop senior public leaders who can effectively adopt a global mindset in their decision making and are able to deal with growing domestic and global complexity.

‘The everything is solved newspaper’
IMEC Inspiration

On 7 June travelers at railway stations in the Netherlands were baffled and surprised by a special edition of the Volkskrant (Dutch newspaper). In this edition big problems of today’s world, for instance tackling climate change, seemed volved. However, it appeared to be a fake edition. A prank by the Yes Men, known for their controversial documentaries in which they fool corporate society with many remarkable and humourous actions. The Yes Men also published a fake newspaper in New York. IMEC got their hands on a version of the Dutch newspaper. It is also readable digitally, if you can read Dutch, make sure to take a look at the advertisements...

TNT MYLP3 Personal Compass
IMEC Program

This reflective and inward looking module took place with the coming of the spring sunshine at the end of March. Participants got to grips with feedback and coaching alongside different inputs and tools for self reflection in the woods near Holten. Guest faculty, Madeleine Ingen housz and Willem Beekman helped define participants personal compasses through singing and paradoxes in nature. Next time, they will extend their focus outwards, to look at engaging and exciting others.

The TNT Mastering Your Leadership Programme (MYLP)

New book Manfred van Doorn
Publication

In this book, Manfred van Doorn returns to the theme of cycles leaders endure in their development to excellence. The book will be available in English and Dutch at the end of September.

Although our personal development appears to be based on a series of experiences, on looking deeper, a pattern emerges, not unlike the patterns in world history. As Mark Twain said, "History does not repeat itself, but it rhymes. Our life goes therefore in cycles. If we have luck the challenges, our resistance and the lessons we are learning from it, will come back on a higher level. Then the circle becomes a diagrid.
